Presented by Dr. Nirmani Wijenayake and Dr Matthew Clemson (School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences)
Although adopting a blended approach to learning has been around for many years, finding the right balance between face-to-face learning and online learning is still difficult. Given the highly structured nature of most science degrees that expect a high in class time commitment, identifying which elements should be replaced or supplemented by on-line activities can be both challenging and crucial. Therefore, it is important to identify/develop online resources that are well-structured, integrate seamlessly with the learning objectives and are readily adopted by students and hence have a high impact on their learning. We evaluated the effectiveness of several online platforms, tools and resources that are available to UNSW staff and have been used in the School of Biotechnology and Bimolecular Sciences this year.
This seminar will cover:
- Integration of Smart Sparrow online resources
- Integration of LabArchives – online lab notebook
- Integration of Pearson’s MasteringBiology in first year biology – report on the pilot use of other online resources to improve student engagement
