Connections Seminar: Indigenous Knowledge in Indigenous Studies Teaching: Using film to bring Indigenous Knowledge into the Classroom

Connections Seminar: Indigenous Knowledge in Indigenous Studies Teaching: Using film to bring Indigenous Knowledge into the Classroom

Presented by Dr Diana Perche, Ben Kelly, Sarah Keech, Nura Gili Indigenous Programs

The importance of embedding Indigenous Knowledge in the curriculum is well recognised, but there are significant challenges in terms of achieving this in practice. Respect for ownership of Indigenous Knowledge, the vital connection between Knowledge and Country, and the appropriate use of Knowledge in a classroom setting are key themes that we will explore in this seminar. We draw on recent experiences of developing high-quality, culturally-appropriate film for use in Indigenous Studies teaching, working with local Elders and Knowledge Holders on Country, and the application of these films in the learning activities.
