Finding new ways to engage university students in learning and representing content for an assignment is a challenge for academics in all disciplines. In this seminar, Garry Hoban will present a suite of student-generated digital media (podcast, digital story, slowmation, video, and blended media) that are easy to create and highly engaging for students to use for assignments in all disciplines. The seminar is supported by a comprehensive website that has been designed for students to use www.digiexplanations.com without taking up course time for academics.
Biography: Garry Hoban is an Professor of Science Education and Teacher Education at the University of Wollongong, Australia. He has been teaching and researching the value of student-generated digital media for the last 10 years. He is the creator of both ‘slowmation’ and ‘blended media’ and is interested in understanding how and why students learn content by creating various forms of digital media. In 2013 he was awarded an Australian Office of Learning and Teaching National Senior Teaching Fellowship to support science academics and science teacher educators to implement assignments using student-generated digital media. He has designed two websites to support students’ media making: www.slowmation.com and www.digiexplanations.com. He has led an OLT competitive grant and an ARC Discovery grant in the area of student-generated media and is the editor of a new book to be published internationally by Routledge in 2015 entitled Student-generated Digital Media in Science Education.
