Embracing Change: Creating Opportunities

Embracing Change: Creating Opportunities
The theme, “Embracing Change: Creating Opportunities” explored new opportunities in learning and teaching and creating educational experiences. In the shifting landscape of higher education this year’s Learning and Teaching Forum showcased learning and teaching practices which demonstrated opportunities explored in the face of increasing change.

The day focused on the three streams of:

Assessment and Feedback: Developing assessment and feedback practices that support student learning, while balancing student and institutional expectations.

Collaboration and Partnerships: Working in partnership to develop quality programs, courses and learning experiences.

Course Design: Designing for flexibility, authenticity and expanded opportunities for student engagement.

The Forum’s Poster Gallery showcased 10 examples of effective teaching practice from academic and professional staff across the University and was also an opportunity for thought-provoking discussions and sharing ideas for improving student outcomes at UNSW. Congratulations to Dr Yenni Tim for her winning poster (as voted by Forum attendees), "Sandbox for Education: Co-creating a career-focused learning experience with the industry".

Keynote

Associate Professor Kathryn SutherlandAssociate Professor Kathryn Sutherland from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand was the Keynote speaker at the 2019 Learning and Teaching Forum. Her presentation Changing Contexts and People in Higher Education: Holism and Akoranga, challenged different ways of being, teaching, learning, researching and working in universities, underpinned by research on holistic academic development and ‘akoranga’, the reciprocity of teaching and learning. Read more in Kathryn's Q&A, where she talks more about the changing landscape of higher education and some of the key themes from her keynote presentation.

Kathryn’s research and practice has three main areas of focus: the experiences of early career academics; holistic academic development; and working in partnership with students to improve teaching and learning. She is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a co-editor of the International Journal for Academic Development. Read more about Kathryn here

A recording of the keynote is now available on the Moodle course site (self-enrolment key: lntforum).
