Inspera - Multiple Attempts

Multiple Attempt is a feature that allows candidates to retake the same assessment multiple times. This feature helps candidates to learn and understand the topics better by allowing them to practice until they get it right. As a result, candidates can improve their understanding, confidence, and overall academic performance. 

In a nutshell, with Multiple Attempts, candidates can:

  • Improve their understanding of the topic by practicing multiple times

  • Increase their confidence by identifying and correcting mistakes

  • Enhance their academic performance by getting better grades

  • Prepare more effectively for exams by identifying improvement areas 

Note: Due to an existing known issue in Inspera where adding staff as students create a student profiles with long strings in their usernames in Inspera, we recommend not adding staff as student in the sandpit courses for testing "Multiple Attempt". Instead we recommend to use dummy students for Multiple Attempt testing in the sandpit courses.  

Question Set Considerations

  • The planner should only use fully automatically marked questions/ question sets, with or without predefined feedback. With predefined feedback enabled, candidates see the feedback after the test submission.
  • Multiple Attempts is available with the "Numerical Simulation" Question type.
  • Randomized Question Order is supported with Multiple Attempts to make it more dynamic and engaging by preventing reliance on memorization and promoting independent engagement with the content.
  • The planner can change the maximum number of attempts if test is activated but has not been attempted by any candidates.
  • The "Post Submission Review" is optional but recommended for candidates to access submissions with or without feedback.
Note: This feature is not compatible with any Lockdown Browsers such as Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB) and Safe Exam Browser (SEB).

How to enable Multiple Attempts

  1. Click Enable Multiple Attempts.

  2. Set a maximum number of attempts in the text field. User can also select the “Unlimited Attempts” option.

  3. Under Setting final result, choose between the following options:

  • Highest: The highest score achieved among all attempts will be considered the final result.

  • Average: The average score obtained across all attempts will be calculated and used as the final result.

  • Latest: The most recent score from the candidate's attempts will be considered the final result.

 

Points to Consider: Check box to enable "Multiple Attempts" will be available only after disabling the below settings:

1. In the Deliver settings Auto-Submission needs to be disabled.

2. In the Exam day settings within Deliver, "Text to Speech" and "Spell Checker" need to be disabled

 

Once test is enabled, number of attempts and final results will be available on the active test page:

Note: Committees are not supported in Multiple Attempts at this time. While it is still possible to create and use committees, this will not restrict access to results and submissions outside the assigned committee. All graders will have unrestricted access to all candidate data on the individual attempts.

How to Mark "Multiple Attempt" enabled test

When using a test with Multiple attempts, a Planner may prefer a total mark over a grade because total marks take into account all attempts and provide a more granular assessment of the candidate’s performance, allowing for a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses.

For "Multiple Attempts" enabled tests created via an external tool, final results (based on the Highest, Average, or Latest grading logic) will sync from Inspera to Moodle.
