Marking 2.0 is used for all Inspera assessments at UNSW. Both Planners and Graders can access assessments in Grade > Grading workspace. However, only Graders can allocate marks and feedback in Inspera.
For more information please refer to the following useful links:
Description of standard workspace setup for planners
Description of standard workspace setup for graders
Graders can commence marking after the test has ended (auto-submission assessments) or after the student has submitted (manual submission assessments).
Marking as a Single Grader
If this setting enabled, the grader will mark all submissions by themselves. The process is a bit less complex because with this setting grader will not align grades with other graders. For detailed information please refer to the Inspera guide: Guide - Mark candidates (for single grader)
Automatically Marked Questions
Automatically marked questions are automatically marked by Inspera Assessment once the candidate has submitted the test. Grader does not need to mark an Automatically marked question, unless intend to override the mark. These questions are marked with a lightning icon and have the text Automatically calculated in the upper right corner.
Manually Marked Questions
For manually marked questions the Grader has to set marks themselves. Manually marked questions can be found within the Marks dropdown, and are identified with Not set. Within the Marking panel, grader/planner have the option to set marks. Select the number of marks by clicking the Marks dropdown and choosing from the list, or type the number of marks on your keyboard. For more information, please refer to the Inspera guide Set marks on questions
Marking in Randomized Questions
The navigation behaviour when randomized pull is applied to a Question Set is as below:
• When a Grader marks a pulled question and navigates to the next student who did not receive the same question, Inspera will redirect the Grader to view the first question of that student's submission.
• To remain on the same question when marking even when randomized pulling is applied, we suggest using the " Question Assignment" settings and implement some restrictions on Inspera roles.
For more information, please visit: SharePoint site (Internal only) - Randomized Questions.
Confirmation of Marking
Once the grader/planner marked all the questions, confirmation of marking is required as a final step. To perform this action click "Confirm" in the header:
After clicking this button grader/planner will be presented with a window where they can confirm the marking. Once grader/planner are ready to confirm the marking they can click on the blue "Confirm now".
For more information please refer to the Inspera guide: Confirmation of marking
Point to Note: For In-term assessments, once marks are confirmed by Inspera, marks will be released to the Moodle Gradebook. For more information please refer to the following: Moodle Grade Sync to ASTRA
For Final and Supplementary Exams, once marks are confirmed in Inspera, marks will flow directly to Astra. For more information please refer to the SharePoint site (Internal Only): Final Learning Pathway
Marking with Multiple Graders
In any test, if multiple graders are involved, they all need to confirm the marking. After graders confirm the marking, if other graders have not confirmed the test, below message will prompt. The test is only fully confirmed and change its status to ‘Graded’ after everyone has confirmed.
If there are multiple graders in a test, Inspera allows setting “All graders must confirm” or “One grader can confirm”. The default settings at UNSW is “All graders must confirm”. The settings can be changed later after the test is created. Please refer to the Inspera guide: Test settings - Grading workflow
Reconfirmation of Marking
If marks for a test have been confirmed but further changes are required, Planners can choose to Reopen marking. In the Grading window of the Test, expand Options at the top-right corner and 'Reopen for marking' option can be seen. Once reopened, Graders can continue making changes to the marking and will need to go through the confirmation process again (Eg. one or all graders must confirm again).
Adding or Removing Graders or Contributors
The purpose of adding contributors is to give certain users access to the test, and enable them to perform tasks for the specific test. Users that are not added as contributors will not have access to the test, or the candidate list for the test. Moodle users are not automatically added to the Inspera assessments in that Moodle course. Graders need to click on the relevant Inspera LTI link in the Moodle course to be granted as a grader of that assessment. This option is available for Planner, and to a limited extent for Chief Invigilator.
On the "Manage contributor list", planner can remove either remove the user as a contributor or remove roles. For more information please refer to Inspera Guide Test settings - adding contributors to test.
Question Assignment for Graders
The QUESTION ASSIGNMENT feature allows planner to assign questions and sections of questions within a Test to specific graders. This feature needs to be enabled in the Test settings and can be done before or after a test has been completed by students. For more information please refer to the Inspera Guide Question Assignment
Bulk Release of Explanations to the Candidates
The bulk release of explanations can be performed within the grading workspace to the corresponding candidates. This option is only enabled after Marking is confirmed and the explanation has been saved. Bulk explanations can be sent to all candidates either through the Planner's workspace via the "Explanation Overview" tab with just one click "Send Explanations" or as a grader from the grading workspace tab by clicking "Explanations- Send all Explanations". For more information please visit the Inspera article Explanation of Grades
Offline Marking
Inspera provides flexible tools for graders to work offline. This functionality makes it possible to grade candidates without using Inspera Assessment's built-in grading tool. For more information please refer to the Inspera guide Grade with Excel
Download or Export Marks
This is available for Planners and Graders and they can download the marks and grades for each candidate on each question in a test once the test is closed. For more information please refer to the Inspera guide: Download Marks and Grades
Why are my marks not syncing to Astra?
Please check that all the below are set up correctly:
• Within myUNSW Assessment Planning, select the correct Astra ID from the dropdown corresponding to the Final Exam(This must be done for both the Final and Supp Exam.)
• In Astra, ensure the "Source" has been defined as “"Inspera" for the Final Exam Assessment Item.
• In both Astra and Inspera, the max mark indicated in Astra must be identical to maximum marks in Inspera Question Set.
• In Inspera, make sure that all Graders involved have confirmed grades and marking is complete. The Test status on Inspera should indicate ‘Graded’ (not ‘Finished’ or ‘Grading in progress’).
Once the steps above are performed, Inspera will sync marks to Astra overnight.
Please refer to this SharePoint article for more information: Mark Sync to Astra (Internal only)
How do I distribute students to different graders/markers?
You can choose to use the COMMITTEES feature to distribute students to different graders/markers. Using this feature, students are grouped into committees, and graders are assigned to each committee. Committees can be set up before or after an exam in the test delivery settings. Use question assignment if you would like to allocate questions for your graders/markers in each committee to mark.
For more information, please visit this article: SharePoint Site - Distribute students (Internal only)
How can I get Final Exam marks in Moodle gradebook?
For centrally managed final exams, marks are not synced to Moodle grade-book. Marks need to be confirmed in Inspera for the marks to flow over to Astra overnight. Students receive their final course marks in myUNSW one week after the end of exam period. For local/school-managed final exams, marks need to be confirmed in Inspera for the marks to flow over to Moodle Gradebook.
What can I do in Inspera when a student queries their mark?
If a student queries their mark for a specific question or number of questions, use the EXPLANATION feature to communicate any additional feedback about their current or revised mark. The EXPLANATION feature can be accessed on both the Planner and Grader menu within the Grade window. You can provide this additional feedback/justification (i.e., Explanation) as text, attach as a file, or record an audio.
For more information, please visit the Inspera article: Explanation of Grades
How do I contact other markers to review/Moderate Marks?
Teaching staff with Planner and/or Grader role can flag students within the Test Candidate list (e.g. in Test setting page) to indicate that a specific student’s submission requires further review. Otherwise, Inspera also has a recommended moderation workflow to best make use of its available functionalities. It involves the set up of Committees (i.e. splitting students and graders into groups), assigning a moderator amongst nominated graders, and using the Moderation flag where necessary.
For more information please refer to the SharePoint site (Internal only)- Review/moderate Marks
