In Inspera Assessment, a question set can be created to group and structure questions. A variety of different question types are available for selection when creating a question set. Once a test is generated, the question set is used to present the questions to the candidates.
Create Question Sets
Academics can create a question set by accessing the "Author" tab, choosing the "Question sets" option, and selecting "Create New."
Add Questions
There are 2 options to add a question to a question set:
- Create new question
- Add from the question bank
Once the questions are added to a question set, to change the order of questions, use the arrow icon to drag and drop the questions to the desired position.
Inspera Question Version Control
If a question has been edited from the question bank, the next time academics open a question set containing that question, they will receive an alert indicating that some questions have been changed.
- To update all the changed questions, click on the "Update all" link in the alert.
- To update only one particular question, scroll down to the specific question and click the blue refresh icon in the bottom left corner. Then, select "Preview new version" to view the changes or "Update" to apply the new version to this question set.
Remove Questions
A question can be removed from the question set by using the delete icon (bin) on the question.
Create Sections
Inspera Assessment supports using sections in Question Sets and offers a variety of settings for sections. A section is defined as a group of questions within a question set. Selecting "New section" at the bottom of a question set to create a new section.
Section Layout
In the section layout, academics can decide how the question set is displayed for candidates. The default layout is one question per page. Additionally, a section stimulus can be added, providing a one-page/text area that will appear to the left or at the top for each question in the section.
Randomisation, Pulling and Candidate-Selected Questions
There are 3 types of randomisations on questions in an Inspera test:
- Randomise order of questions within a Section - Inspera will present all Questions in the Section in a random order to students.
- Pull and Randomise within a section - Inspera will present a number of randomly selected Questions from the Section to students. All Questions within the Section must have the same marks for the option to be available.
- Candidate-selected questions within a section - Inspera will allow candidates to select which questions they wish to answer from a selection. Only the questions which they select will be submitted for grading, even if they have answered other questions. All questions within the section must have the same marks for the option to be available. To learn more about Candidate-selected questions, please visit Inspera's guide - Candidate-selected questions.
Add Resources
Academics can add various resources to a question set, such as audio, websites, and documents. These resources can be securely and easily accessed during closed-book exams by clicking on "Show resources" at the right bottom of the question set," selecting "Add resource," and choosing the type of resource to be included.
Design Settings
As an author, staff can also determine the design settings for a question set by selecting Design at the bottom of the question set's edit mode.
To learn more about all the options available, please check Inspera's guide - Design settings in question sets.
Preview Previous Versions of the Question Set
Inspera question set log events allow teaching staff to view dates and times the question set is created, viewed, and revised. Staff can also preview the previous versions of a question set.
Manage Question Sets
Duplicate questions and question sets - Duplicating a Question Set or a Question is a useful feature for staff who want to re-use questions from the item bank. When duplicating, every part of the question is copied, including the question text, images, PDF attachments, scoring rules, and alternatives. After the duplication is made, any changes applied to the copy will not affect the original.
Delete a question set - To clean up unused question sets, staff can move the question sets to Trash.
Preview a question set - Previewing a question set in Inspera allows teaching staff to check how the questions are set up and how marks are awarded. It helps ensure that the questions display as intended, especially when they contain images, math formulas (LaTeX), or other content, so users can be confident they will be shown correctly to the students.
Print and download question set - Instructors can keep a copy of the question set by printing it out or downloading it using the Print icon on the top right corner.
Share a question set - Teaching staff can share questions and question sets with others by inviting additional users as co-authors. When a question or question set is shared with another author, that person gains full access to save new revisions to the question/question set.
How many questions can I have in a question set?
It is difficult to quantify a maximum number of questions in a question set because the 'size' of a question set is determined by number of characters/letters which relate to the lines of code/text of the full question set. Images and other attached material (pdf, video) create one line of text each for a question. Typically <500 questions in a question set are accommodated, but please bear in mind that this number will vary if there are longer or shorter text questions in the set.
You will not be able to add more questions to a question set if the size upper limit has been reached and may receive an error message such as "Invalid session, your session has been invalidated. Try reloading the page". Please remove questions or contact EdTech Support for assistance.
Why am I unable to locate my colleague's question sets?
Staff can have full access to save new revisions to a question and question set created by other staff when the question and question set are shared with them. The owner can share Questions and Question Sets with others by inviting additional users as co-authors.
For how to share question sets, please visit Inspera guide - Invite co-authors.
