Media Comments allow comments and likes to be added to audio, video and image files in Moodle Media Collections and theBox. With audio and video files, comments can be added to specific points in the media item's timeline.
Different comment types allow you to control who sees your comments. This includes the whole course, just you or a person you send feedback to and you.
Core functionality
There four types of comments:
- Course Comments - can be seen by all participants in a Moodle course.
- Private Feedback - can only be seen by the owner or owners of the video who is recieving the feedback from the person making the comment. The person making the comment will also be able to see their comment and the owner will be able to reply to them privately.
- Personal Comments - are private to the person making the comment. Personal comments are usually used to make private notes on an important file or highlight an important point in an audio or video file to assist revision.
- Public (World) Comments - are similar to Course Comments but allow comments to be visible on any web site using embed codes. In Moodle, this type of comment is disabled by default and can only be enabled on General Collections. If enabled, Public (World) Comments can be collected for use within Moodle, via theBox or by using embed codes.
Each type of comment can be made as either a general or a timeline comment if the media item is an video or audio file.
When a media item is viewed in Moodle, a window below the item displays the comment area where comments can be searched and downloaded. For audio and video files, a graph displays the location of comments that have been added to the timeline.
Moodle functionality
Media comments are primarily used as part of the Moodle Media Collection activity.
There are two types of Media Collection:
- General Collection - used to showcase media within a Moodle course. An instructor can upload material for participants to view and/or they can allow students to contribute media items.
- Assignment Collection - used to collect media assignments from students which can then be submitted to a Moodle assignment activity for grading.
Comments and likes can be enabled/disabled within a Moodle Media Collection. If comments and/or likes are enabled, then anyone who can view an item can comment on or like it.

theBox functionality
The basic functionality of Media Comments in Moodle Media Collections is also available in theBox with two main differences:
- All comment instances are available to view - Comments are specific to the Moodle course they are made in. Comments made against a media item in different courses are stored as separate comment instances in theBox. You can switch between all instances of a media item in theBox but you cannot add, edit or delete comments made in Moodle. There is also a default instance that is not linked to a Moodle Course.
- Public (World) Comments are enabled - Public (World) Comments are similar to Course Comments but allow comments to be visible on any web site using embed codes. In theBox, this type of comment is enabled by default and when enbaled they are the only comment type that can be added using theBox. These comments can be added to instances for use within Moodle or theBox and/or displayed using embed codes.
