Blocks—The boxes down the left-hand panel of the My courses page are called "blocks". They contain specific information or functions for you and your students.

You can add many different kinds of blocks to your course's home pages. For example:

  • a Glossary block that you have set up in connection with a Glossary activity within the course. Every time a student logs in, a different word and definition from the Glossary displays in the block.
  • an HTML block containing a Twitter feed.

Click the Customise this page button   to show the tools you can use to hide, edit, delete or move a block on the My courses page, and to display the Add a block dropdown menu.

To add a block to a page:

  1. Click the Customise this page button  at the upper right of the page.
  2. In the Add a block block, select the block you want in the drop-down list.

The new block will display in the blocks column.

To remove a block from a page:

  1. Click the Customise this page button  at the upper right of the page.
  2. In the block you want to remove, click the settings  icon and select ' Delete [block name] block.'

To rearrange blocks on the My courses page:

  1. Click the Customise this page button  at the upper right of the page.
  2. Click and hold the Move [block name] block icon , drag the block up or down the block column and drop it in the desired location.

To dock and undock a block:

You can now dock all blocks so that only their title is visible in a tab at the top left-hand corner of the Moodle page.

  • To dock any block, click the docking icon Move this to dock icon at the top right of the block (hover your mouse over it and the identifying text Dock [block name] block displays).
  • To undock, hover over the docked block's tab and click the undocking icon Undock this item icon.

Note that if you dock the Navigation block, it will no longer be immediately obvious when menu options become available, or change, as you move from page to page.

To hide and unhide a block:

  1. Click the Customise this page button  at the upper right of the page.
  2. In the block you want to hide, click the Settings icon  and select 'Hide [block name] block'

  3. The screen will refresh and the block will be greyed out.
  4. To unhide the block, click the Settings icon and select 'Show [block name] block' .

To configure block settings:

  1. Click the Customise this page button  at the upper right of the page.
  2. In the block you want to configure, click the Settings icon  and select Configure [block name] block.

  3. In the following page, you can configure several block settings such as the Default region, Visibility and weight. For more information, click the Help icon  next to the setting you want to change.

  4. Click Save changes.

Course overview

This section of the page contains a list of the courses you teach. Notifications of recent changes to the course display below the course link. Click a course name to access its home page.

The Course overview, although it is located in the right-hand pane of the Moodle window, is actually a block, and behaves like a block. You can hide and unhide it, or dock and undock it, or move it into and out of the left-hand blocks column.
