Overview
The Activity completion settings:
- allow you and your students to track their progress through a sequence of Moodle learning materials towards completion of a course
- allow you to define what constitutes completion of an activity, whether it is:
- viewing the activity
- receiving a grade for the activity
- performing actions specific to this activity (e.g. for a blog, creating a blog post or commenting on a blog).
Used in combination with the Restrict access settings, these settings help you ensure that students view certain resources or complete certain activities before moving on to others.
This page provides the relevant instructions.
When to use
Use activity completion in conjunction with the Restrict access settings when you want to make access to a resource or activity dependent on the user having viewed a previous resource or completed a previous activity.
Use it in conjunction with Course Completion to select activities that count towards course completion.
If completion tracking is enabled for the course, use the Completion tracking field to indicate whether a resource or activity is to be included in completion tracking.
Benefits
The Activity completion settings allow you to control and monitor your students' progress through a sequence of learning materials presented in a Moodle course.
Guide
Getting started
Before you can access the Activity completion section, completion tracking must be enabled in the course settings. It is enabled by default, but if it has been turned off for any reason, you can enable it again by editing your course settings (Settings > Edit settings > Completion tracking).
Step by step instructions
Enable activity completion
To enable activity completion, in the Activity completion section of the activity’s Adding or Updating page, select your preferred method of Completion tracking from the 3 options available in the drop-down list.
- Select Do not indicate activity completion if you are not setting completion conditions for this activity.
- If Students can manually mark the activity as completed is selected, a Mark as complete check box
will display next to the activity on the course page. Students will then be able to indicate their completion by marking the check box
. (To avoid confusing students, if you are not using activity completion for this activity, select Do not indicate activity completion.) If you select this option, you can enable the Expect completed on date fields and enter a date.
- Selecting Show activity as complete when conditions are met allows you to require that a number of conditions are met before the activity can be considered completed. These will differ for each activity; the following table details the available conditions. (All activities can be manually marked complete by students

The date you enter in the Expect completed on fields is for your own reference when viewing the activity completion report (see below); it does not display to students.
When you have made your selections, click Save and return to course.
View and interpret the Activity completion report
To view the activity completion report, in the Settings block under Course administration select Reports > Activity completion.
Note: You must have an activity with 'activity completion' turned on before this report will be visible.
In the report that displays, completed activities are indicated by ticked check boxes for the relevant student in the activity/resource's column. Columns for items for which you have set an Expect completed on date are highlighted.
Student access to the activity completion report
Students do not have access to the activity completion report (as of Moodle 2.9 upgrade). This is only available for instructors and users with higher roles as this report shows activity completion data for all students.
A related report can be made available to students that shows participation information for the individual student. This is enabled by editing your course settings (Settings > Edit settings > Appearance > Show activity reports = Yes).
When enabled, the student will see a reports section on their profile page which is accessed by:
- Click your name in the top right to access a drop down menu and select Profile.
- Locate and click the course in the list under Course details > Course profiles.
- Locate the Reports section on the right hand side and select a report or log to view
Percentage activity completion on student Dashboard
As part of the Moodle 3.3 upgrade (November 2017), Moodle introduced a new Moodle Dashboard. As part of the changes, the introduction of a percentage display was introduced.
The percentage display on the course overview page will only be enabled if the course has activity completion enabled.
This percentage value which users may see, relates only to the percentage of activities (with activity completion) that have been completed. The percentages do not relate to course completion or the individual grade.
