The Announcements forum allows academics to make announcement that are emailed to students enrolled in the course.
Each course has its own Announcements forum that is displayed within the course's quick links section in the course main page. It is different from normal forums:
- Every enrolled student will receive email notifications from the announcements, provided the post is visible to them. Hidden forums will not send emails to students but will still send emails to staff.
- Only Instructors and administrators can make posts or replies.
- Images, videos and other media can be added in an announcement but some media will not show in the email.
It is not recommended to delete the Announcements forum. If teaching staff don't want to use it, the best option is to hide it from students.
Add an announcement
The announcements forum is included in every course automatically. Staff can create discussion topics to create announcements for students. Replies to discussions will not send email announcements.

Edit an announcement
Announcements can be edited once posted. It is best to edit announcements within 30 minutes of posting so the changes are included in the announcement email to the students, later edits will only update the forum post.

Reply to a post
Instructors and admins can post replies to an announcement topic, replies will not be sent as an email to enrolled students. Replies are a good way to add additional information to an announcement after it is sent.

Delete an announcement
Announcement posts can be deleted but will send an email if deleted after the 30-minute editing window. Removing an announcement post will remove it from being displayed in the announcement forum.

Restore a lost or deleted Announcement forum
Announcement forums cannot be created from scratch in courses. Deleted announcements forums can be recovered via the recycle bin or by copying/importing an announcements forum from another course.

Restore the 'announcements and forums' quick link
The "announcements and forums" quick link provides a summary page for all announcements and forums in the course. It can be recovered from the recycle bin or recreated if deleted.

If a course is hidden do students get announcement emails?
If a course is hidden, students do not get emailed about forum posts, such as Moodle announcements. Instructors may receive emails depending on their subscription to the forum and their email digest.
