Livestreaming in Echo360/Lecture Recordings+

The livestreaming of teaching sessions such as a lecture, tutorial or seminar can take place in an Echo360/LR+  enabled venue, for students who are unable to attend class in person. Presentations and other media content including videos can only be livestreamed using the Echo360/LR+ platform. In addition, teaching sessions will be recorded for students to access through Echo360/LR+, at a later time.

Echo360/LR+ is used to facilitate live lecture streaming and lecture recordings. The service is powered by the cloud-based service “Echo360 Active Learning Platform”. For online students in hybrid learning, livestreaming allows them to participate in lectures in real time (at the same time as in-person students). Recorded lectures are useful for in-person and online students, as they are permanently stored for the review, reflection, etc. of learning.

Livestreaming is not the default option and needs to be enabled. This means that livestreaming with Echo360/LR+ is an opt-in option. Staff attached to the course or in a teaching support role (i.e.,Teaching Support Assistant) can enable livestreaming by selecting 'Livestream' from the Recording Option listed in the Meeting Details section of myUNSW Class Maintenance.

Live streaming option in Timetabling

The main points of difference between Livestreaming and Hybrid are outlined below:

 LivestreamingHybrid
Use of Digital PlatformsLimited to Echo360/LR+Able to facilitate a class using Echo360/LR+, MS Teams, Zoom and Blackboard Collaborate Ultra
Activities, discussions or Q&A between the teaching academics and studentsLimited to the Chat Function and LR+ features which enable activities such as PollingAble to facilitate live activities, discussion, Q&A, group activities etc. through the features offered on some digital platforms i.e. MS Teams and Zoom
Interaction between teaching academics and students attending class in-person and onlineMostly one way interaction - teacher to studentTwo-way interaction between teacher and students attending in-person and online; as well as between students themselves

Video Camera enabled venues

Several Echo360/LR+ enabled venues have had a video camera feed included in the recording since Term 1, 2022. This provides students with a more enhanced experience of a recorded and/or livestreamed lecture by being able to see the person speaking to the audience, in addition to the slides being presented.

Lectures are recorded across the three campuses (Kensington, Canberra and Paddington) in a variety of CATS and non-CATS venues. This page lists Echo360/LR+ enabled venues.

All scheduled recordings in an Echo360/LR+ enabled room will begin at 5 minutes past the hour and conclude at 5 minutes before the hour.

Current UNSW Lecture Recordings+ enabled venues

Camera descriptions:

Only available in certain venues - please see the list below.

By default, the video camera feed will be included in all recordings for these venues in addition to the presentation and audio. This means the video enabled Echo360/LR+ spaces are opt-out, and will require a manual opt-out prior to the lectures or classes taking place.
If you would like to disable this feature, please fill in an IT Request Form for all schedules. Please include the Course Name/Code and venue location.

Digital CameraFixed ceiling mounted high-quality camera with no movement options available. Camera will focus on the lectern, the front area of the teaching space and the projector screen(s).
Hybrid CameraFixed wall or ceiling mounted camera with options available via the AMX control panel. These options include tracking, 3 camera preset options, as well as full manual control (up/down/left/right/zoom movements). Instructional videos on how to control the camera are available on the Innovation Pillar Hybrid Learning support site.
