Associate Professor Ian William McArthur, Academic Mentor, Arts, Design & Architecture

Learning and Teaching:
Associate Professor Ian William McArthur's teaching can be characterised as a reflexive, dialogic student-centred approach to learning and teaching founded on humanistic and holistic pedagogy (Rogers, 1969; Vygotsky, 1980; Kolb, 2014). His teaching advances design education that emphasises heutagogic active learning, collaboration, discovery, reflection, use of immersive technologies, flipped modes, threshold concepts and experiential situated learning (Lave, 1991), and collaboration with industry.  In 2015 A/Prof. McArthur instigated mad.lab; an innovative interdisciplinary annual mobility program for UNSW art, design, media, and architecture students in Chongqing, South West China that uses mapping as a research-led learning and teaching methodology. Funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs, the curriculum is project-based and includes: lectures from local and international guests, peer and industry critique, field trips, studio tutorials, collaborations, meetings and social interaction with the creative industries, cultural institutions, local communities, and public.

Research:
A/Prof. McArthur's research focuses on three interrelated domains (1) Participatory urban media, (2) Sino-Australian design collaboration, and (3) Experimental interdisciplinary practice using digital media in installations, sound art, performance, and improvisation. The synergies between these foci are most clearly expressed in his ARC funded research investigating participatory urban media. 
The impact of his traditional and non-traditional research outputs is evidenced in book chapters and journal articles published by Avedition, Springer, and Intellect, three of the leading international academic publishers of interdisciplinary research relevant to my hybrid practice. A/Prof. McArthur's citation rate since 2015 stands at: Citations 136, h-Index 5, i10-Index 3 (Google Scholar).
