The UNSW Workshop activity is a flexible peer assessment tool. Students can submit their work online as text and/or an attachment and they can be graded on both - their own work and their peer assessments of other students' work.
The UNSW Workshop activity adds 3 new features to the Moodle Workshop tool:
- Team Mode - enables groups of students to submit work and be marked as a group
- Calibrated Evaluation Method - enables markers to be calibrated against a set of example assessments provided by the teacher
- CSV upload - enables the instructor to make allocations by uploading a .csv file

Using Workshop with Groups
UNSW Workshop activity can be set up for students to submit assessments in groups and perform peer evaluation with the groups.
There are several modes of setting up a group workshop depending on the various settings for:
-
Team mode: Within the "Submission Settings"
-
Group mode: Within the "Common Module Settings"
Students Review Another Group
If a teaching staff wants students to submit one assessment as a team and then be allocated to review other team’s submissions, the below steps should be followed. This creates a workshop where a single student can submit on behalf of their team. Students will be allocated to review the submissions made by other teams. To enable this, the following settings should be applied:
-
Enable Team Mode (Submission settings)
-
Set Group mode (Common module settings) to any option to add a filter to the interface.
-
Select the appropriate grouping for the group assessment below the group mode option.

Students Review Their Own Group
This is a scenario when a teaching staff requires students to submit their own assessment in a group and review someone else's assessment from the same group. The indicated steps create a workshop where students can submit their own submission as usual but will only be allocated other submissions from the same group if you use random allocation.
-
Set Group mode (Common module settings) to separate groups and select the appropriate grouping.
-
Ensure Team Mode (Submission settings) is NOT enabled

Students Review Someone in a Different Group
If teaching staff want students submit their own submission but they must review someone else in a different group.
-
Set Group mode (Common module settings) to visible groups and select the appropriate grouping.
-
Ensure Team Mode (Submission settings) is not enabled
This creates a workshop where students can submit their own submission as usual but will only be allocated other submissions from a different group if teachers use random allocation and tick ‘Prevent review by peers of the same group’ when doing the random allocation.

Workshop grades do not update in gradebook.
If a grade was changed in the closed phase of the workshop activity, the grade will not update in Gradebook.
To have the grade update in Gradebook, you will need to switch to an earlier phase in the UNSW Workshop. You can then switch back to the previous closed phase.
