Inspera assessment (test) allows academics to control the date and time when the test starts, which students the test will be available to, and what the settings are. A test must have a question set attached to it. A question set can be used in multiple Inspera assessments.
It is used for both in-term assessments and final exams.
Create an Inspera Assessment
Inspera assessments are added as an activity in Moodle through the "Add an activity/resource" button and choosing "External tool".
Inspera assessment settings
Inspera provides many settings to customise its behaviour and display for students. When creating an Inspera assessment, it initially adopts the UNSW default settings. However, academics can modify these settings to align with their teaching objectives or retain them as default.
While certain settings can be updated after the assessment is created, others cannot be changed once the test is activated or submissions have been made.
Set up options
Set-up options include various settings depending on the type of test and how they should be planned and structured before, during, and after the test window.
Design settings
Design settings allow academics to control how the test is displayed for the students and how students navigate between questions. By editing the design settings in the test, it will override the design settings which were set for the question set.
Assessment settings
The assessment settings tab is used to set up the Grading scale and Thresholds for the test. To find out more about what thresholds are for, please check Inspera Sharepoint Site.
Late submissions in Inspera
There are two methods available to cater for students, who are submitting later than the set due date in Inspera:
- Enable late submissions: Set up the assessment with a primary submission deadline and a late submission deadline.
- Open for late submission: Allow students to press "submit" after the test end time (manual-submission test ONLY).
Enable late submissions
Enable late submission setting allows staff to set up two test deadlines: Primary submission deadline and Test end time. In this case, the Test end time becomes the late submission deadline. That is, students can submit their late assessment past the Primary submission deadline, before the Test end time.
To enable late submissions, select "Enable late submissions" under the test start time. This can be done before or after a test has been completed by students.
Open for late submissions
The "Open for Late Submission" option is only relevant when staff wants to permit students to resubmit their assessments, and "Auto Submission" is disabled. In this case, students have the option to click on the "Submit" button after the test end time.
Note: Students cannot review questions or change their answers; they are only presented with the final submission page of the assessment.
To enable the "Open for Late Submission" option:
- Ensure that the test has been completed and that auto-submission is disabled.
- Click on "Open for Late Submission" below the test end time.
Manage multiple graders
Individuals with access to a test in Inspera are referred to as "contributors. "The contributor list allows staff to view information about the users who can access the test, such as their name, role, and last login. They can also add or remove contributors from their tests. Please check the following links for details:
Manage students in a test
Inspera offers flexibility for managing various student groups. Staff have two options:
-
Create a specific test for a group of students: Only students who meet the Moodle restriction requirements can access the Inspera test, and all graders within the test will assess these students.
-
Distribute students to graders: Organize students and graders into committees, with graders marking only the students within their respective committees.
Create specific test for a group of students
The Inspera - Moodle integration allows to assign students of a specific class or tutorial group to an Inspera assessment. An Inspera assessment may be restricted to individual students or groups through Moodle Restrict Access settings.
Distribute students to graders
The Committee feature allows distributing students to different graders/markers. Students are grouped into committees, and graders are assigned to each committee. Committees can be set up before or after an exam in the test delivery settings.
For step by step how to create committees, assign students and graders to committees, and manage committees, please check Inspera guide - Committees
How to roll over an Inspera assessment from a previous term?
Similar to other Moodle activities set up as LTI links (e.g. Turnitin Assignment, Lecture Recordings etc.), always create a new Inspera (LTI) link instead of using the Inspera LTI link rolled over from the last term or copying from the same/another Moodle course site. Previous Questions and Question Sets will still be available within Inspera to associate with this new Test.
This is important to ensure that the Inspera test link is functioning with the latest Moodle-Inspera communication protocol.
What should I set as a max mark in Inspera and Moodle?
For ease of remembering, we recommend aligning max marks with what is indicated within the associated Astra grade item, regardless within Inspera Question Set/Test or Moodle Grade settings.
Max mark settings in Inspera
For centrally managed final exams:
-
Assessment marks flow directly from Inspera into Astra.
-
The max marks of an Inspera Test’s Question Set must be equal to the course’s Astra final exam max mark.
For locally managed in-term assessments:
-
Assessment marks flow from Inspera directly into Moodle via Inspera-Moodle LTI.
-
In this case, the max mark can be different between Inspera and Moodle, this is due to different behaviours for Inspera-Moodle and Inspera-Astra integrations.
Max mark settings in Moodle
This is only applicable for locally managed in-term assessments where Inspera interacts with Moodle (and not directly with Astra). In this scenario, Moodle’s max mark must always reflect what is indicated for the associated Astra assessment item.
Can I use Auto-submission and Late Submission feature together?
The "Enable late submissions" feature cannot be used with "Enable auto-submission" in the Inspera test.
With Auto-submission enabled (enabled by default), graders cannot start marking immediately after the primary submission deadline. They can only do so once the test end time is reached for all students (including those granted extra time). To ensure that these two features are not used simultaneously if one feature is enabled, the other feature will be greyed out and unavailable for selection.
Is it possible to manually add students to the test?
It is NOT advisable to manually add UNSW existing students to an Inspera test as one-time users or via CSV upload. The student access to Inspera tests is usually managed through integration with Moodle or myUNSW. Manually adding students to an Inspera test can potentially cause synchronization issues between Inspera and other systems. For instance, there may be issues with transferring marks to Moodle and Astra.
How to auto-provision students to Inspera via Moodle LTI?
When an academic clicks the LTI link for the first time to create a test in Inspera, Moodle course-enrolled students are automatically enrolled into the Inspera test as candidates, based on Moodle's activity access settings. Subsequent re-syncing of the latest student list occurs only when the LTI link is clicked again by a staff member.
To learn more about Moodle’s activity access settings, please visit Manage an Activity or Resource in Moodle
How to allow students to view their submission after the test?
To allow students to review their submissions after the test has finished, instructors should enable the "Allow candidate post-submission review" setting. They can also specify when the submission will be available and what information will be visible. If no date is set, there is no time limit, and the students will always have access. To limit access, select an "available from" and "available to" date.
Note: Students can view both questions and their submissions in the review.
How to create a demo or mock test?
To create a demo test or mock test, simply create an Inspera as normal via Moodle External Tool.
Remember to move this grading item into the unmarked category in Moodle Gradebook. For more information about the unmarked category set up in Moodle Gradebook, please visit our guide.
