Inspera supports a number of roles for staff, with each role having its own set of permissions that provides users with access to different capabilities.
The table below displays available Inspera roles and what each role can do.
Inspera role | What can they do? |
---|---|
Planner |
Has access to the tools: Deliver, Monitor, Grade. Can create tests and invite contributors. A planner needs to be a planner on a test to be able to perform planner-actions. A planner that creates a test is automatically a contributor on the test. A planner can also be invited by another planner, and thus a test can have more than one planner. The Planner role ultimately links the Question Sets to the Test timeslot and sets the conditions under which the exam will be set, e.g., spellcheck yes/no, adds cover sheets, identifies candidates with extra time and allocates accordingly. This role is fulfilled by Faculty for in-term assessments and by Central Exams for final assessments in the exam period. Course convenors will, as they are now, be responsible for creating, ensuring moderation of and finalising the exam. This can all happen within Inspera. |
Author | Has access to the Author tool. Can create questions and question sets, but needs to be a contributor on a test to author question set for a test. |
Chief Invigilator | Has access to the tools Deliver and Monitor. Needs to be Chief invigilator on a test to be able to monitor a test in the Deliver or Monitor tool. |
Invigilator | Has access to the Deliver and Monitor tool. Needs to be a contributor on a test to invigilate a test. |
Grader |
Can be assigned to grade submissions when added as a contributor on a test. |
Role descriptors have come from Inspera Support with some added comments for UNSW context. For more specific detail on the functionality within each role in Inspera visit the Inspera Help Centre.
Who can assign an Inspera role?
Inspera roles within each test are granted to UNSW staff based on inputs from either Moodle or myUNSW's Assessment Planning.
For centrally managed final exams
These tests are created in Assessment Planning/myUNSW.
Inspera roles are provisioned based on the information entered for the course in Assessment Planning/myUNSW. Staff need to ensure they accept the role on myUNSW once it becomes available, and the Inspera roles will be accessible to them overnight.
Examination role (Assessment Planning) | Inspera role |
---|---|
Convenor | Planner, Author, Invigilator, Grader |
Referee | Invigilator |
Reviewer | Author |
Marker* | Grader |
*Note: The marker role is auto-accepted, there is no requirement for the staff to accept the role.
For school-managed final exams/ in-term assessments
These tests are created in Moodle using the Moodle External Tool.
Inspera roles are automatically provisioned based on the staff's role in Moodle. UNSW maps the existing Moodle roles of staff to various corresponding Inspera roles. Refer to the table below for descriptions of the role mapping when accessing Inspera via Moodle.
All staff members can log in to Inspera by using the Inspera LTI link in Moodle.

What are the different roles in Inspera at UNSW?
Inspera roles within each test are granted to UNSW staff based on inputs from either Moodle or myUNSW's Assessment Planning. This is to ensure that Inspera associates your account with at least one role (e.g. Planner, Grader, Invigilator etc.) so you are able to access at least some if not all of the Inspera tools (Author, Deliver, Monitor etc.).
For your students, we strongly encourage that you set up an in-term Inspera activity in your Moodle course and not access Inspera for the first time during their final exams.
