This collaboration with Optometry academics and the Immersive team explores the creation of a simulation of the 'cover test'. This fundamental test that the optometry students need to master is made more complicated as the strabismus conditions they are looking for arent present in the vast majority of their peers. The sim allows students to practice the physicality of the test with their virtual patient as well as honing their skills in looking for the movement of the pupils that reveal the presence of strabismus.
Project Details
Testing done on the proof of concept application has been very well received by both staff and students. Current development is looking at enhancements around the virtual characters and refinements to include intermittent conditions and tuning of the severity.
TECHNOLOGY & DEVELOPMENT
The development team of staff and work integrated learning students are using the Unity game engine to create the 3D environments, characters and interactivity. Testing and classes will be done with the classroom set of Meta Quest 3 VR headsets or the Meta Quest Pros.
