theBox System requirements and supported file formats

System Requirements

Supported operating systems and web browsers are those that we extensively test, and where issues arise we will actively seek to resolve them.

As it is impossible to test every possible operating system / browser configuration, we use Google analytics data to select and test the most widely used configurations that UNSW staff/students use when accessing the TELT services.

However, it should be noted that OS/Browser configurations other than those we support often work correctly and if known issues exist for these they are listed on our website where appropriate.

Operating System

Recommended: Windows 10, MacOS Big Sur, iPad OS 14

It is not recommended to use older versions of operating systems that are out of support such as windows XP, Vista or Windows 7.

Internet Browsers

Compatible browsers include:

  • Google Chrome 8x or later (recommended for optimal compatibility, this has been thoroughly tested on Windows)
  • Safari 14 or later (recommended for optimal compatibility, this has been thoroughly tested on Mac)

Recommended browser settings:

  • Cookies should be enabled.
  • Pop-ups should be allowed.
  • Javascript should be enabled.

Recommended browser behaviour:

  • Add-ons and toolbars can affect any browsers performance and it is recommended that these are not installed where possible.
  • Browser cache can become corrupted over time and it is recommended that you clear your browser cache before contacting technical support.

MS Internet Explorer is not recommended.

Internet Speed

When streaming or downloading media from theBox service, a reliable internet connection of 5MB/sec or faster is recommended.

As upload speeds are significantly slower on most home internet connections, it is recommended to upload large media files from a directly plugged in computer on campus.

Recommended software

To view all the media content that is uploaded to theBox  service, the following software is recommended:

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), or an equivalent (Open Office, Viewer, etc)
  • PDF reading software such as Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader
  • Podcatching software such as iTunes or Juice
